What is OpenRouter?

OpenRouter is a unified API that gives developers access to more than 600 text, image, video and audio models from over 80 providers through a single, OpenAI-compatible interface. You sign up, buy credits that work with any model or provider, and create an API key to start sending requests.

The platform routes requests across a distributed infrastructure and can fall back to other providers when one goes down. Failed attempts aren't billed. Inference is charged at each provider's list price, and OpenRouter takes a fee when you buy credits: 5.5% on Standard, 8% on Business. Other features include auto-routing, prompt caching, budgets, data-policy-based routing, Zero Data Retention routing, and EU or US in-region routing on higher tiers.

OpenRouter fits indie developers, AI-native startups and enterprises that want to compare or switch models without rewriting their integration. Teams can also use workspaces, admin controls and SSO.

Fallback routing sends requests to other providers when one fails, and failed attempts aren't billed.

Enterprise data governance

Data policies, in-region routing and SSO restrict prompts to the providers and regions your organization approves.

Prototyping on free models
