How to choose image tools
Start with the job, because this category covers very different tools. Task is the first filter: Midjourney and DALL-E 3 generate images from text, Topaz Gigapixel and Let's Enhance upscale, and remove.bg and Removal.ai cut out backgrounds. Looka and LogoAI make logos, while Aragon AI and BetterPic make headshots. Suites such as Adobe Firefly, Picsart and Fotor cover more ground, but a single-purpose tool may be all you need.
Pricing model comes next. Many tools are freemium, including Clipdrop and Fotor. Others are paid only, such as Midjourney (from $8/mo) and Topaz Gigapixel (from $12/mo), while LogoAI and Luma AI offer a free trial.
Platform matters if you have a set workflow. Topaz Gigapixel is a Windows and macOS app, while Midjourney and Looka are web-only. Slazzer covers the most platforms, including mobile, desktop and Figma.

What should I look for in an AI image tool?
First, match the tool to the task: generation, upscaling, background removal, logos or headshots. Then check the pricing model, whether it runs on your platforms, and whether you need an API or self-hosting. For example, Topaz Gigapixel is a desktop app that upscales up to 16x, while Let's Enhance works in the browser and goes up to 512 MP. We have not tested these tools, so try a free plan or trial where one is available.
What are the alternatives to Midjourney?
For generating images from text, the closest options here are DALL-E 3, which follows detailed prompts and is used inside ChatGPT, and Stable Diffusion, whose open models can be self-hosted or called through an API.
