Data & Research tools compared
From each vendor's own pages, re-checked every two months. Of 31 tools we checked, 5 of 7 that state a policy don't train AI on your content, and 3 hold SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
How to choose data & research tools
Start with the kind of data you need, because this category covers very different jobs. For academic literature, Semantic Scholar, Consensus and Elicit search research papers. For your own documents, NotebookLM answers from the sources you upload. For specialist data, Veridion covers company records, Reonomy covers U.S. commercial property, and Bloomberg Tax and Westlaw Precision serve tax and legal professionals.
Next, check the pricing model. Semantic Scholar, Google and Zotero are free, while Elicit, Consensus and Rows are freemium, with paid plans from $49, $20 and $6 a month. Many industry tools, including Veridion and Clari, ask you to contact the vendor, so no price is listed.
If you plan to build on the tool, look for an API: Semantic Scholar, Consensus, Perplexity AI and Rows list one, while NotebookLM does not.
Finally, check platform and openness. Most tools run on the web, Capacities also has desktop and mobile apps, Microsoft Recall runs only on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, and Zotero is the listed open-source option.
Frequently asked questions
Are there free data and research tools?
Yes. Semantic Scholar (scientific paper search), Google (web search) and Zotero (collecting, organizing and citing research) are listed as free, and Zotero is also open source. NotebookLM, Gemini, Elicit, Consensus, Rows and Microsoft Copilot are freemium, so they have a free tier as well as paid options.
How much do data and research tools cost?
Listed starting prices range from $6/mo for Rows to $2000/mo for Equals. In between are Capacities at $9.99/mo, Microsoft Copilot at $18/mo, Consensus at $20/mo, Elicit at $49/mo, MarginEdge at $350/mo and Reonomy at $400/mo. Many specialist tools, such as Veridion, Bloomberg Tax and Westlaw Precision, list no price and ask you to contact the vendor.
What should I look for in a data or research tool?
First, match the tool to your source material: research papers, your own uploaded files, spreadsheets or industry data. Then check whether the pricing model suits your budget, whether you need an API, and whether it runs on your platform. Consensus, for example, answers from peer-reviewed papers, while Rows is a spreadsheet with an AI data analyst. We did not test these tools, so try a free tier or trial where one is available.
What are the alternatives to general AI assistants for research?
Microsoft Copilot and Gemini are general assistants that cover research alongside other tasks. For answers based on scientific literature, Consensus and Elicit are more focused options. NotebookLM limits its answers to the sources you upload, and Thomson Reuters Checkpoint Edge gives cited answers from Checkpoint content for tax professionals.
