Turn a PDF Into a Presentation With AI: Tools, Limits, Prices
Convert or summarize? Match your PDF to the right AI route, compare free tiers, limits and prices in one table, and catch what the AI gets wrong before you present.

Short answer: Before you pick a tool, decide which of two things you want. One is a conversion: the same pages and layout, made editable in PowerPoint. The other is a summary: a shorter deck rebuilt around the key points. For conversion, use Adobe Acrobat, or Smallpdf and iLovePDF for something quicker. For a summary, use a generator such as Prezi AI, Gamma, MagicSlides, Slidesgo or Perceptis AI. A chatbot like ChatGPT can draft an outline with speaker notes and even a basic .pptx, but charts and images from the PDF usually don't carry over. Whichever route you take, check every number before you present.
The vendor guides ranking for this search each recommend their own product. This one sorts PDFs by type, puts the published limits and prices in one table, and ends with a checklist for the mistakes these tools make.
Convert or summarize: decide this first
Converters take a 40-page PDF and give you roughly 40 slides. The layout stays and the text becomes editable. That's what you want when the PDF already is a deck (someone exported slides to PDF and the original is gone) or when a designer needs the layout kept exactly. Published comparisons rate Adobe Acrobat the most accurate for layout. Smallpdf and iLovePDF are faster, and those same comparisons warn you'll spend time cleaning up the output.
Generators read the document, pull out the main points and build new slides on a template, so a 40-page report might come out as 15 slides. This is what most people searching for this want. It's also where things go wrong, because generators shorten, rephrase and sometimes invent.
The two fail in different ways. A converter's mistakes are in the layout. A generator's mistakes are in the content, so its output needs a fact check and a converter's output needs a visual check.
Note that opening a PDF directly in PowerPoint is neither. You get uneditable pages at the PDF's dimensions, which looks like a deck but can't be edited.
Which route fits your PDF
| Your PDF | Goal | Best route | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own slides exported to PDF | Get editable slides back | Converter (Acrobat) | Fonts and spacing shifting |
| Business report or board pack | Executive briefing | Source-grounded generator (Perceptis AI) or Prezi AI | Figures rounded or detached from their source |
| Academic paper | Conference or lecture slides | Generator plus your own outline, or chatbot outline | Equations, figures and citations dropped |
| Scanned document | Any | A tool that lists OCR (SlideSpeak says it handles scanned PDFs), or OCR first, then generate | Garbled text if the tool lacks OCR |
| Lecture notes | Teaching deck | MagicSlides, to-teach.ai, Slidesgo | Generic stock visuals |
| Transcript or long text | Talk summary | Chatbot outline, then a generator | Quotes paraphrased as if verbatim |
For teachers and academics. A Reddit thread on this topic is mostly teachers and researchers asking how to get slides out of a paper or report. Generators are good with prose and poor with figures, tables and equations, which are exactly what a paper depends on. Three things help:
- Tell the tool what to keep. Put "Focus on methods, results and conclusions. Skip the literature review and appendices" in the instruction field.
- Set the slide count deliberately. ChatSlide's own guide notes that a 60-page document squeezed into 10 slides will be heavily summarized, and suggests asking for 20 to 25 and trimming. For documents over 80 pages, it recommends uploading the key sections as separate files.
- Write the storyline yourself. Write one line per slide stating its message, let the AI draft the text and speaker notes, and paste the original figures in by hand.
For a textbook chapter going into a lesson, to-teach.ai and MagicSlides are built for that job. If you make teaching materials often, our piece on how independent tutors and test prep businesses are using AI covers the wider toolset.
Tools compared: limits, outputs and prices
These figures come from vendor pricing and help pages and from reviews published in 2026, collected in October 2026. "Not stated" means none of the sources we reviewed gave a number. If that's the case for a tool you're considering, check its help page before uploading a large file.

Canva, Presentations.ai, ChatPDF, Presenti and to-teach.ai also take documents, but none of our sources gives clear file or slide caps for them. A few details are known. Presenti accepts Word, PDF, TXT and Markdown, and exports an editable PPTX only on an eligible plan. On other plans you get a PDF reading copy. Its Pro plan was advertised at $8 a month during a 60%-off promotion. ChatPDF generates an outline you can edit before it builds the slides. Canva AI lets you set audience, style and length before generating.
On the free tiers: Prezi's Basic plan is enough to try the generator, but PDF import and watermark-free output are listed under Plus, so a PDF workflow means $19 a month. MagicSlides' 3 presentations a month is the easiest cap to plan around because it's a plain number. Credit systems like Gamma's 400 or Prezi's 500 don't tell you how many decks you'll get.
Skip Tome. It shut down its presentation product on April 30, 2025, though older listicles still recommend it.
How to turn a PDF into a presentation with AI, step by step
- Start from the best source. If the PDF came from a Word file, upload the Word file. Presenti notes that heading styles make the AI's sectioning much more accurate.
- Trim the PDF. Remove the cover, table of contents, appendices and references unless you need them. Fewer pages means less filler and less risk of hitting a cap like Slidesgo's 25 MB.
- Check for scanned pages. If you can't select text in your PDF viewer, the page is an image. Run it through OCR first or use a tool that says it supports OCR.
- List your key figures and page numbers. Write down the 5 to 10 numbers that matter most and where each appears. You'll check the deck against this list later.
- Upload and edit the outline before generating. Adobe, ChatPDF and several other generators show an outline first. Restructuring there costs far less than fixing 15 finished slides.
- Give the tool a brief. Use the prompt below.
- Pick a template, generate, then edit. Replace generic stock images with real figures from the PDF.
- Export. Use PPTX for PowerPoint and Google Slides when people will collaborate. Avoid PDF export if anyone needs to edit the deck later.
Copyable prompt for any generator or chatbot:
Create a presentation from the attached PDF.
Audience: [e.g. non-technical leadership team]
Length: [12] slides, one message per slide.
Slide titles: full-sentence conclusions, not topic labels.
Use ONLY facts and figures from the PDF. Do not add statistics,
examples or claims that are not in the document.
After each figure, add the PDF page number in brackets.
If something is unclear in the source, flag it instead of guessing.
Add 3-4 sentences of speaker notes per slide.
List any tables or charts I should insert manually, with page numbers.
The last line turns the AI's biggest weakness, dropping visuals, into a to-do list.
Can ChatGPT convert a PDF to PPT?
Partly. Upload the PDF to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask for a slide outline with speaker notes, and you'll get a usable storyline. ChatGPT can also hand back a downloadable .pptx. Expect plain text slides on default layouts, not a designed deck. One published tutorial opens that file in PowerPoint and uses Designer to style it slide by slide.
The main limit is that images and charts from the PDF usually don't come across, so plan to paste figures in yourself. The most reliable workflow is to get the outline and notes from the chatbot, paste them into PowerPoint or Google Slides, then apply a template or run a tool like Plus AI on top.
If you already pay for Microsoft 365 with Copilot, you can do this inside PowerPoint. Open a new presentation, attach the PDF from OneDrive in the Copilot chat, give it the slide count and audience, answer its clarifying questions, and save the .pptx. Microsoft's own instructions tell you to review every slide for accuracy.
Models and their prices change quickly. Our report on Replit's switch away from Anthropic shows how much cost alone can drive which model a team uses.
Is it safe to upload a confidential PDF?
Read the data policy before you upload. Slidesgo says it doesn't train on stored results, and SlideSpeak's PDF tool page says "your file stays private." Most of the other tools don't make an equivalent statement on the pages we reviewed, so don't assume one. Plus AI asks for a broad set of permissions when you install it in Google Workspace. Whoever manages your accounts should look at those before you install.
If a document is under NDA, holds client financials or contains personal data, remove the sensitive details first or use a tool your company has already approved. Copilot in PowerPoint, working from OneDrive, keeps the file inside Microsoft 365, which your IT team may already have approved. Our guide to AI for corporate tax compliance teams covers how regulated teams approve tools. If you need governance in writing, the AIUC certification and insurance model shows where vendor accountability is heading.
Slidesgo also raises AI disclosure. In classrooms, academic settings and some client work, people increasingly expect to be told when AI generated a deck. One line on the title slide covers it.
Review checklist before you present
Generators don't tell you what they left out. Go through this list every time.
- Figures: Check every number against your list from step 4. Watch for rounding, swapped units and percentages turned into absolute numbers.
- Claims: Any statistic, example or quote you can't find in the PDF was invented. Delete it.
- Citations: Academic decks need the original references. Generators often drop them, so add them back.
- Images: Replace stock photos that misrepresent the subject with real figures from the source.
- Tables: Rebuild any table that was flattened into bullet points.
- Emphasis: Make sure the summary didn't bury the PDF's main conclusion or inflate a side point.
- Speaker notes: Read them aloud once. AI-written notes often repeat the slide text.
- Editability: Click into a few text boxes. If you can't edit them, you have images of pages, not slides.
- Disclosure: Add the AI note if your setting expects one.
FAQ
How can I turn a PDF into a presentation for free? Use a chatbot for the outline and notes, then paste them into Google Slides, which is free with a Google account. Workspace business plans start at $7 per user per month. For a dedicated generator, MagicSlides gives 3 presentations a month free, Gamma gives 400 credits, and Prezi Basic gives 500 credits but lists PDF import under its paid Plus plan. Presenti's free route exports a PDF reading copy, not an editable PPTX.
Will the slides be editable, or just images of the PDF pages? Generators and proper converters produce editable text. Opening a PDF straight in PowerPoint gives you uneditable pages. Check your export format too, because a PDF export is fixed.
Which AI tool is best for a research paper or report? For a business report you have to defend line by line, use a source-grounded tool like Perceptis AI, which links each claim to its place in the source. For a research paper, combine a generator or chatbot with your own outline and add the figures by hand. For a scanned report, use a tool with OCR.
Can AI turn a PDF into Google Slides? Yes. Gamma and SlideSpeak export to Google Slides, Plus AI works inside it, and any PPTX opens in Slides.
Does Gamma convert PDF to PPT? Not in the converter sense. Gamma builds new slides from your PDF and exports them to PowerPoint, Google Slides, PDF or PNG. To keep your original pages, use Acrobat. One 2026 review found Gamma's copy and images can be weak and less suited to traditional business decks, so leave time for rewriting.
Is there a file size or page limit? Slidesgo caps uploads at 25 MB. SlideSpeak says it handles 100+ page PDFs. ChatSlide suggests splitting documents over 80 pages. Most other tools don't publish a limit, so trim your PDF first either way.
How do I stop the AI from changing or inventing content? Use the prompt above, which restricts the AI to the PDF, asks for page numbers and tells it to flag anything unclear. Then run the checklist. For client-facing or board decks, a tool that links each claim to its source makes checking much faster.
