Platforms
Perplexity AI is an AI search and answer engine that answers questions using live web search. It also offers developer APIs, so teams can add the same search and agent features to their own products.
Perplexity's developer documentation lists several APIs. The Search API returns web results. The Agent API runs third-party models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Z.AI, Moonshot AI and NVIDIA, with tools such as web search, image search, URL fetching, people search, finance search and a code sandbox. There is also an Orchestrator API, an Embeddings API with pplx-embed models, and a Decisions API.
API usage is billed per token or per 1,000 requests, with no per-request fees on the Orchestrator API. Perplexity fits researchers and knowledge workers who want sourced answers, and developers who need search grounding for their apps or agents.
Who it's for
Ask a question and get an answer drawn from live web search instead of reading many separate pages.
Developers can call the Search API to give their product current web results.
The Agent API combines third-party models with tools for search, URL fetching and sandboxed code.
The Embeddings API produces vectors for indexing and retrieving documents at low per-token cost.
