How to choose email tools
Scope. Start with the job you want done. SaneBox is the narrowest option: it filters email, moving unimportant mail out of your inbox. Shortwave is an email app that organizes, writes, searches and schedules from prompts. Superhuman combines AI email with a writing assistant and a docs suite. CPA Pilot is a different kind of tool: an AI tax workspace for U.S. CPAs, EAs and tax firms, so it only makes sense if that is your work.
Pricing. Starting prices run from $7/mo (SaneBox) to $30/mo (Shortwave). Superhuman is freemium, with paid plans from $12/mo, while the other three offer free trials.
Platforms. Shortwave lists web, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android. SaneBox lists web, iOS and Android. Superhuman and CPA Pilot list web only.
Audience. Superhuman is aimed at professionals and teams, and CPA Pilot at tax practices. We have not tested these tools, so use a free plan or trial to check the fit with your own inbox.
Frequently asked questions
Are there free AI email tools?
Superhuman is the only tool listed here with a freemium model. Shortwave, SaneBox and CPA Pilot offer free trials, with paid plans after that.
How much do AI email tools cost?
Listed starting prices are $7/mo for SaneBox, $12/mo for Superhuman, $29/mo for CPA Pilot and $30/mo for Shortwave.
What should I look for in an AI email tool?
Decide whether you need filtering only, like SaneBox, or help with writing, searching and scheduling as well, like Shortwave. Then check that it runs on your devices and that its starting price suits your budget. Only Shortwave lists desktop apps for macOS and Windows, and SaneBox and Shortwave both list iOS and Android.
What are the alternatives to Superhuman?
Shortwave is the closest alternative on this list if you want an AI email app, and it also lists desktop and mobile platforms. SaneBox is the lower-priced option if you mainly want unimportant mail moved out of your inbox. CPA Pilot is only a relevant alternative for U.S. tax professionals, as it is a tax workspace rather than an email app.
