Start with the job, because this category mixes very different tools. Dubbing and voice is the focus of ElevenLabs and Murf AI, while Synthesia, HeyGen and Colossyan build AI avatar videos, with dubbing or translation listed for Synthesia and HeyGen. VEED covers subtitling and dubbing inside an online editor, Submagic focuses on captions for short social clips, and Phrase manages translation and localization work rather than video itself.
Pricing model comes next. WhisperX is the only fully free option, and most others are freemium. Submagic is paid from $12/mo, while Phrase and Adobe Premiere Pro offer free trials before paid plans.
Platform matters if you don't want to work in a browser. CapCut runs on web, desktop and mobile; Premiere Pro on desktop and mobile; WhisperX on your own Linux, Windows or macOS machine or server.
API and control matter for automated pipelines. ElevenLabs, HeyGen, Submagic and Murf AI list an API. WhisperX is the only open-source choice, giving you word-level timestamps and speaker labels, though you run it yourself.
WhisperX is free and open source, but it handles speech recognition with timestamps and speaker labels, not dubbing. ElevenLabs, Synthesia, Rev, VEED, CapCut, HeyGen, Colossyan and Murf AI are freemium, so each has a free tier alongside paid plans. Phrase and Adobe Premiere Pro offer free trials instead.
Listed starting prices run from $6/mo for ElevenLabs to $59/mo for Colossyan. In between are Submagic at $12/mo, Synthesia and Murf AI at $19/mo, Adobe Premiere Pro at $22.99/mo, HeyGen at $24/mo, Rev at $25.49/mo and Phrase at $27/mo. We don't have a starting price listed for VEED or CapCut, and WhisperX is free.
First check that the tool is built for your task: captions, dubbing, avatar video or translation management. Then compare the pricing model, the platforms it runs on, and whether you need an API or self-hosting. We haven't tested these tools, so try your own sample video on a free tier or trial where one is available.
If you prefer specialized tools to an editor like VEED or CapCut, Submagic focuses on captions and clipping for short-form video, while ElevenLabs and Murf AI focus on voice and dubbing. WhisperX is a self-hosted option for speech recognition, and Phrase suits teams managing translation and localization.
