What is Amazon Q Developer?
Amazon Q Developer is AWS's AI assistant for software development. It suggests code in real time, from short snippets to full functions, and offers inline chat. It also answers questions about AWS services, architecture, costs and resources.
Its agentic mode can take on multistep tasks such as writing tests, documentation and code reviews. To do this it reads and writes files, generates diffs and runs shell commands. Other features include vulnerability scanning with suggested fixes, Java upgrades (for example Java 8 to 17) and .NET porting from Windows to Linux. You can use it in JetBrains IDEs, VS Code, Visual Studio, Eclipse (preview), the terminal and the AWS Console. It also connects to GitLab, GitHub, Slack and Microsoft Teams.
It suits individual developers and engineering teams that build on AWS. Note that AWS says it will end support for the IDE plugins on April 30, 2027, and suggests Kiro as the successor.
