What is Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant for chatting, searching the web, drafting content and generating images. You can use it to brainstorm, summarize and plan, and it gives web-grounded answers for research. Several features have been renamed: Project is now Notebook, Tasks is now Cowork, Deep Research is now Researcher, and Study and Learn mode is now Guided Learning.
Copilot runs on the web, in desktop apps for Windows and Mac, inside Microsoft Edge, and on iOS and Android. Anyone with a Microsoft account can use the free tier, though some capabilities have usage limits. Paid plans unlock more.
For businesses, Microsoft sells Copilot inside Microsoft 365 Business plans or as an add-on. These versions put Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and add pre-built agents plus enterprise data protection. Copilot suits individuals who want a general-purpose assistant and teams that already work in Microsoft 365.
