Our verdict

Descript is the best fit for spoken-word video, where editing the transcript replaces timeline scrubbing and recording, captions and publishing live in one tool. Media hours, AI credits and per-seat pricing add up quickly for teams, and visual-first editing is not its strength. Test your normal workload against the free plan's 100 credits before you pick a tier.

Best for: Podcasters, educators and small teams producing spoken-word video

What is Descript?

Descript is an AI video and audio editor where you edit a recording by editing its transcript. You record in Descript or import footage, audio or a Zoom call. It transcribes the file, and when you delete or move words, the matching video and audio is cut or moved too. A timeline is still there for fine control.

The editor also covers recording (remote Rooms and a screen recorder), audio cleanup with Studio Sound, filler-word and retake removal, eye contact correction, green screen, captions, translation and dubbing, voice clones and text-to-speech. Underlord, its AI co-editor, can turn a raw recording into a cut from a prompt, make clips and write show notes or social posts. There is also an API and MCP server for editing video through code.

Descript suits podcasters, YouTubers, and marketing, sales, training and support teams who need to produce video without a dedicated editor. It has a free plan, and paid tiers are priced per person.

Descript review

Updated October 2026

Descript is the strongest pick for spoken-word video when you want one tool that records, edits, captions and publishes, and it gets expensive fast once AI credits and seats enter the picture. The editing model is simple: the transcript is the timeline. Delete a word and the footage under it goes. Move a sentence and the clip moves with it.

Descript homepage

How it works in practice

You record inside Descript (camera, screen, or remote guests in 4K multitrack) or drag in existing footage. Descript transcribes it in 25 languages, and from then on you edit the text. The timeline stays available for fine control, but the main pass happens in the document.

Descript lays the workflow out as five steps: record, edit, refine, share, multiply. The edit step covers one-click removal of filler words and retakes. Refine adds Studio Sound for noise removal and voice enhancement, eye contact correction, green screen, and Regenerate, which rewrites audio and video from typed corrections using a voice clone. Smooth Jump Cuts, one of the newer features, smooths the cuts that filler-word removal leaves behind. Share sends a review link with comments pinned to the video, plus captions, thumbnails and a YouTube description. Multiply turns one long recording into clips, translations and reformatted versions for YouTube, TikTok and LinkedIn.

Underlord, the AI co-editor, sits across all of it. You give it a raw recording and a goal in plain language, and it produces a first cut. Descript also ships an API and an MCP server, so you can connect Claude or another AI agent and edit, transcribe and clip from a chat window. For a team where one person owns the agent setup and others just want clips, that's a practical shortcut.

What stands out

Editing by deleting words. This is the feature that decides the purchase. A podcast or interview is mostly a question of what to cut, and cutting text is faster than scrubbing a waveform. A customer success manager quoted on Descript's own site says it feels like working in a Google Doc rather than wrestling with a timeline. That's a testimonial the vendor chose, so treat it as the pitch, not the verdict. The structural point holds anyway: a subject matter expert can read a transcript and mark cuts without ever opening a timeline editor.

Underlord plus the MCP route. Descript pitches Underlord as turning a raw recording into a tight cut in minutes. Nothing public gives a success rate for complex prompts, so judge it on your own footage. The free plan includes limited Underlord access and 100 one-time AI credits, which is enough to try a few prompts on a real recording before you pay. The MCP server matters more for teams than solo creators. It means editing can happen where people already work with an agent, not only inside the Descript app.

Recording to publishing in one place. Remote 4K multitrack recording, editing, captions, thumbnails and review links live in the same product. A CMO at Revelo, quoted by Descript, says that combination sold him. Descript also publishes customer results: Cloudinary cut post-production time by up to 50%, Algolia saved 116 hours of video production time, and HubSpot doubled content output. Those are vendor-reported case studies, not independent measurements, but they point to the same use case: teams producing a steady stream of talking-head and training video. Descript cites a 4.6 average on G2 across 837 reviews and says more than 6 million creators and teams use it. Both figures come from Descript's own pages.

Where it falls short

The limits are mostly about metering. Free gives you 60 media minutes a month, so a single hour-long recording uses the whole allowance. Paid plans raise that to 10, 30 or 40 media hours, which is plenty for one weekly show but tighter for a team uploading raw multi-camera footage. AI credits are a second meter. Hobbyist gets 400 a month, Creator 800, Business 1,500. The pricing page doesn't say how many credits an Underlord run, a generated clip or a Regenerate pass costs, which is telling. Run your normal workload through the 100 free credits and see how far they go before you commit to a tier.

Top-ups for extra media hours and credits appear on Creator and Business, not Hobbyist. A heavy month on Hobbyist means upgrading, not buying more.

Feature gating also catches people. Hobbyist exports at 1080p. 4K needs Creator. Translation and dubbing in 30+ languages, custom avatars and Brand Studio need Business. If your plan is to dub every episode, the real entry price is the Business tier, not the headline number.

The transcript model fits speech and fits it well. For footage with little talking, such as music videos, cinematic work or visual-first social edits, the transcript gives you nothing to grab and you're left with a basic timeline. CapCut or a conventional editor serves that work better.

The testimonials on Descript's site are all positive and hand-picked. Read independent reviews on G2 and Trustpilot for complaints about credits, exports and billing before you buy, because the vendor's own pages won't surface them.

Value for money

Prices as of October 2026, per person per month. Hobbyist is $16 billed annually ($24 monthly), Creator is $24 ($35), and Business is $50 ($65). Annual billing saves about a third on the lower tiers, so pay yearly if you're sure you'll stay.

For a solo podcaster publishing at 1080p, Hobbyist at $16 is the sensible start. It includes Studio Sound, filler-word removal, custom voice clones and 10 media hours, and four hour-long raw recordings a month use only 4 of those. Creator at $24 earns its extra $8 only if you need 4K export, AI video generation or the stock library, or if you want the 800-credit allowance and top-ups.

Teams feel the per-person pricing. Creator scales to three seats, which costs $72 a month billed annually. Business scales to five seats, so a five-person team pays $250 a month billed annually, or $325 on monthly billing. You get Brand Studio, dubbing, 40 media hours and priority support with an SLA for that. A team above five people moves to Enterprise, which is custom-priced, so budget for a sales conversation. Compared with hiring freelance editors, the numbers work. Compared with a free or cheaper tool, they only work if you use the AI features regularly. Podcasters weighing cost can compare options in Descript Alternatives for Podcasters on a Budget.

Who should pick it, who should skip it

Pick Descript if your content is mostly someone talking: podcasts, interviews, tutorials, webinars, internal training and sales or support video. It suits small marketing and learning teams that need consistent branded output without a dedicated editor, and it suits solo creators who want recording, cleanup, captions and clips in one subscription. Buyers with security reviews to pass have SOC 2 Type II, SAML SSO, SCIM and GDPR compliance on offer, with the fuller controls on Enterprise.

Skip it if your edits are visual first: multi-camera shoots, colour-graded footage, music-driven cuts or frame-accurate commercial work. Skip it too if your volume is high and your budget is tight, because media hours, credits and per-seat pricing add up quickly past five people. If your main goal is cutting long videos into viral shorts, or you only need remote recording, a narrower tool may cost less. Descript Alternatives by Job sorts the options by use case.

Setup notes

Seats on Creator and Business are billed separately from the plan's included seat, so confirm the total before adding teammates. Enterprise is the tier that lists an AI training opt-out and custom data retention. If you record client calls or confidential material, check what the lower tiers do with your recordings before uploading. Descript's privacy page says personal data is kept as long as necessary for the purposes it was collected for.
